The Spanish Factory Zytech is the first European company to achieve this certificate

Zytech LED gets the DLC certification in US for its most innovative LED tubes

The LEDS tubes made by the Spanish Company Zytech LED have obtained the DLC Certification in US. This achievement suppose for the Spanish manufacturer to be the first European Company in having this certification for its LEDs.

The DLC (Design Light Consortium) Certification confirms the efficiency of the LED products, and reunites all the American Electrical Companies. To get incentives (rebates) in the US it is mandatory that installed products have this Certificate. It is the case for T8 tubes of 19.5 W from Zytech Led, approved by US Energy Department. Thanks to that customers are incentivized with 0.12 USD per kWh and a financing line of 0% interest at 3 years. This allows the American customer the substitution of conventional tubes by LED tubes at a real investment cost of 0 USD at end of useful life, because due to savings generated by its lower consumption compared to conventional tubes the investment is recovered in a few years or even months, if heavily used.

The Zyled T8 12S consumes 18W without ballast and internal driver, and 19.5W using the ballast, either magnetic or electronic and instant (the LEDs work without reactants nor ballast). This tube has a light flux higher than 2050 lumen in the CCT3800K version, and is one of the most efficient tubes in the market. Its design and characteristics allow the direct substitution of a fluorescent tube by this LED model without any installation modification, and it is the first model in the market approved by DLC who has a double use function, because the same unit works at direct connection if needed, removing the reactants and ballast.

In this case, the Zyled T8 12S is unique among competitors by having a driver that is able to work with and without reactants. This product has been granted a success since its introduction in the US and many engineering and distribution companies are working with this model in California for complying with title 24 starting in January 2014, because it fulfills all the prerequisites set by the Administration and Utilities in California.

The Zytech LED Company currently focuses its efforts on expanding its production lines in order to obtain other incentives in USA. As a matter of fact, in the next months the company foresees to present a new luminaire line with Energy Star Certification, the most efficient and lowest consumption than ever before.

The Zytech LED Company is still the European leader in the US market, and this year has obtained a 20% growth on its sales over the past year.

This year, Zytech’s family of GX/GQ G23/G24 LED bulbs was approved by ETL/UL in USA, which also made Zytech LED the first company with this product and the certification thereof in America. The G Family Zytech LED bulbs have powers from 5 to 13W 1100Lm and greater; lifetime is more than 30,000 hours; they do not contain mercury or any toxic substance, nor emit infrared or ultraviolet; and are equipped with transparent cover or opaque (frost).

Energy Star Certification

Obtaining ETL/UL certifications is already a milestone achieved by the company with corporate headquarters in Zaragoza, as Zytech LED is the first and only manufacturer of Spanish LEDs and one of the few European companies that have Energy Star certified lighting products. Obtaining this certification is a prerequisite for the electricity distribution companies in the EU to accept the product for rebate programs and incentives that allow rapid return on investment.

To earn the Energy Star certification, products must undergo long and hard evaluation to prove the efficiency, quality, durability and safety of products, such as tests of 6000 hours to demonstrate that they meet the highest specifications. Among these, achieving the highest technical quality and durability, significant energy savings, performance, certain conditions of temperature, high efficiency and no losses in the long run. Lighting products certified by Energy Star also have a minimum 5 year warranty and a lifetime of between 35,000 and 50,000 hours, and meet high requirements for brightness and color range.

Zytech LED
The Spanish group Zytech, dedicated to the manufacture of photovoltaic modules (Zytech Solar), mini wind turbines (Zytech Aerodyne) and electric vehicles (Zytel), added to its production of a new line called Zytech LED products, which is manufacturing tubes, spotlights, LED bulbs and lamps. This new activity is carried out in the production facilities of Zytech Solar, which owns 100% of the group.

The company, with corporate headquarters in Zaragoza and production plants in China and Spain, has thus diversified its activity with revolutionary LED technology, which among its many advantages has a much higher efficiency than all previous or current technologies (incandescent, halogen, fluorescent efficiency… ), longer life, instant on, great tolerance for on-and-off and continuous use, and significant energy savings. This new line of business is within the philosophy of Zytech group markets related to renewable energy products, sustainable mobility and energy conservation and efficiency. Also, new products are known for their excellent value and durability.

Zytech Group

Zytech has its corporate headquarters in Zaragoza (Spain), and international offices in Italy, France, Germany, Holland, Belgium, USA, Mexico, Chile, Hong Kong and China. Zytech Solar manufactures its products at its production plants in Spain and China.

By 2017, the streets of New York will be bathed in a clear, white semiconductor glow, Mayor Mike Bloomberg recently announced. The city plans to replace 250,000 high-pressure sodium streetlights with LEDs. Bloomberg called the move a “no-brainer.”

New York’s streetlights currently produce a baleful orange glow by electrocuting vaporized sodium atoms. Sodium bulbs have been around since the 1930s and are commonly used in cities. But LEDs last longer (20 years) than sodium bulbs (6 years), tend to be more efficient, and give off cleaner, more illuminating light.

New York has already gone to LEDs on select streets in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and in Central Park. The $76.5 million project will replace streetlights in waves of 80,000 and, and if projections bear out, save $14 million in maintenance and energy annually.

New York’s transportation commissioner, Janette Sadik-Khan, said in a press conference, “These 250,000 new lights will redefine our roadways and neighborhoods, bringing in clearer, whiter and more attractive lights to our 6,000 miles of streets and 12,000 miles of sidewalks.”

Bloomberg and company say New York City’s LED project is the world’s biggest—but it’s hardly the first.

Los Angeles, for example, recently finished replacing just over 141,000 streetlights with LEDs. The city says savings have so far outstripped projections (63% cost reduction compared to the forecast 40%), and light pollution is much reduced because LEDs can be better directed, preventing unintended light leakage.

Other US cities upgrading to LED streetlights include Seattle, Las Vegas, Austin, and San Antonio, among others. Buenos Aires will soon install some 100,000 LED streetlights. More may follow. According to Navigant Research, shipments of LED streetlights are set to rise from 3 million in 2012 to 17 million in 2020.

Beyond energy and maintenance savings, LEDs can also make city lighting smarter. Senior Navigant research analyst, Eric Woods, said, “LED lamps allow for better dimming control than standard street lights, and their electronics allow for easy integration of control nodes.”

Woods thinks finance may be the biggest hindrance to wider adoption. Upfront costs of projects can stymy cash-strapped municipalities.

Accelerating adoption of LED lighting in cities is mirrored at home. Though LEDs currently make up less than 10% of the residential market, they’re the fastest growing segment, and IMS Research predicts they’ll account for 66% of the market by 2020.

Current offerings include dumb, relatively cheap, and long-lived bulbs from Cree ($8) or smarter bulbs from LIFX and Philips. LIFX and the Philips Hue are more costly, but using a smartphone or tablet, you can dim them, turn them on or off remotely, and even change their color—all that without updating a single switch or wire.

Guest post written by Chuck Swoboda

Chuck Swoboda is CEO of Cree, which makes LEDs and LED lighting products.

President Obama set what he considers an ambitious goal for reduced energy consumption during his State of the Union address Tuesday night: “Let’s cut in half the energy wasted by our homes and businesses over the next twenty years.”

Why wait so long?

The technology and economics to achieve much of this goal exist today. One of the most antiquated devices wasting power in your home right now is the light with which you’re reading this article. Your incandescent bulb is based on technology that is more than 130 years old, a light source that converts most of the bulb’s energy to heat rather than light.

American companies that build lighting based on modern technology – LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) – can enable consumers to save money and slash their electricity usage for lighting by as much as 80 percent. Today. That change can achieve much of the President’s goal since lighting accounts for nearly one-fifth (19 percent) of electricity spending in the average household, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

As consumers, we already rely upon LED lights in our cell phones and HDTVs. The barrier to the widespread use of efficient LEDs for lighting has been the high upfront cost of LED fixtures and bulbs. But now advancements in technology are dramatically lowering prices, so much so that a sub $10 LED bulb, which delivers brilliant, high quality light for more than a decade could soon be a reality.

LED lighting is already cost effective – extremely so – for businesses and municipalities.

The City of Los Angeles is saving $5.3 million annually thanks to the Green LA initiative that has thus far replaced 114,000 high-pressure sodium street lights with LED lighting, the nation’s largest such project. Once completed, Los Angeles anticipates LED lighting will save taxpayers $10-million-a-year, nearly two-thirds of what the city had been paying for lighting its streets.

Sheetz, the convenience store and gas station chain, ranked 61st on Forbes Magazine’s List of America’s Largest Private Companies, has installed LED interior and exterior lighting at more than 130 of its locations across six states. The energy savings: 45 percent on interior lighting, and as much as 55 percent on exterior lighting that illuminates Sheetz’s gas pumps. As expenses drop, LED lighting is helping boost top-line growth, according to Sheetz, which reports customers find the brighter facilities more visually appealing and perceive them as safer.

Such examples explain why LEDs accounted for 8 percent of the U.S. lighting market in 2012, according to McKinsey & Co., primarily in street lighting, retail and office environments.

Now it’s the consumer’s turn.

Fundamental advances in LED semiconductor technology, optics, and lighting system design now enable LED lights to break century old cost and performance barriers that have prevented consumers from realizing the savings businesses and municipalities already enjoy. While a typical incandescent bulb uses 60 watts of power to generate light, the current state of LED technology can produce the same light for less than 10 watts. A better, more efficient product means less expensive light. To a consumer, this means saving money – significant amounts of money.

As the cost factor shrinks, adoption of LED lighting climbs. The industry’s current rate of cost reduction could result in a doubling of LED lighting adoption over the next year. The shorter the payback on the upfront expenditure, the more likely consumers will choose LED lighting. We’ve already seen this trend in commercial lighting markets. As we approach price parity with traditional lighting, any remaining barriers for commercial and consumer adoption should continue to diminish, and we believe the rate of adoption will accelerate.

Not only does this trend result in better lighting that saves Americans money and time (imagine not changing a bulb for more than a decade), but it will also eliminate a tremendous amount of physical waste. According to IMS Research, collectively, 5.6 billion bulbs light American households and businesses, including 4.2 billion incandescent bulbs and about 1 billion compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs that contain toxic mercury. More than 1 billion new bulbs are purchased every year.

The President’s own U.S. Department of Energy predicts the switch to LED lighting over the next two decades could save $250 billion in energy costs. There’s no need to wait.
